Always looking for a different point of view…

I remember a few summers ago getting up before the sun and driving away from the city with only a rough idea of what lay ahead.

That’s how it always is. No matter how promising the forecast until you actually arrive and see first hand what the conditions are the results are up in the air.

There weren’t many clouds as I drove out and it didn’t look promising at all. By the time the sun had breached the horizon I still didn’t have anything that I thought would be a keeper.

The crops around me were fully grown and not yet ripened. When that happens wheat that is top heavy like barley is susceptible to being flattened by the storms that we get in late July.

The barley field just a field away from me had many such flattened areas so I hurried over to them just to see if I could make any sense visually with what was there.

The cloud cover that morning was very light and the sky ultra blue. I walked to the edge of the barley field always being careful to never trespass. After all, even though the fields aren’t posted as private and have no fence around them they are still someones private property. I am always respectful of that and have passed by many interesting shots simple because I chose not to trespass.

The flattened crops, at least the one I found interesting was right next to the gravel road I was on. I grabbed my gear and snapped away from a high angle, low, vertical, horizontal, you name it, I tried it.

I wasn’t too thrilled with the result when I got home but chose not to delete anything hoping that maybe one day the images might be of some use.

Six years later I happened upon this sequence and at once found them interesting.

It was apparent that the vertical was the best of the lot and voila. A photograph that I normally would never have thought of turned out for me.

I am always looking for different ways to photograph the same places I frequent.

Happy shooting,
