Never Dan.. I have seen just a tiny smudge in the sky when I was in Iceland a couple of years ago but that is sadly all.. We are nowhere near far enough north.

@ Bernie, first aurora that I photographed in shorts and sneakers. LOL It was 6 Celsius and no mosquitoes. LOL

@ Kevin, it’s still a few weeks yet before I start going out regularly. This weekend was kind of a fluke but it’s only going to be better from here on in.

very nice Dan, I’ll be checking the sky before I go to bed the next couple of evenings. To be able to get a shot of the northern lights without freezing one’s fingers must be a bonus.

Wonderful Shot! I remember a time when a friend of mine and I would work in the darkroom at night and have the same thing happen. Where does the time go? Glad to see you back to posting again, kind of quiet around here without you.

@ Anne, thank you for visiting and commenting. We also usually get auroras during the winter. Last night was special. There as a large X class flare from the sun which happened to be pointing towards earth. Bonus, it was almost cloudless too.

It’s not difficult to shoot aurora. Set your focus. Change you camera ISO to something high like 1600 or 33200, your lens f2.8 or wider and vary the exposure from five to twenty seconds. By the displayed image on your camera back adjust the exposure accordingly. Really simple.
